Standing Together For Our Students Futures

Strike Update October 16, 2019

Today has been a long day and as of this update, we’ve been in a mediation with the district for over 6 hours. We are working hard to come to an agreement for our students’ futures.

We began the day with the impression that we would meet with the District at 11:00 a.m. to discuss the professional agreement per an arrangement reached last night. However, the District cancelled that meeting and we were left in limbo for most of the day. Finally, after many frustrating hours, the public meeting between SPEA and the District, with a federal mediator, started about 5:00 p.m.

We started our day at 7:30 with a loud and proud Dump Truck Jamboree down Main Street to Highway 285 – here’s the link on CEA’s YouTube channel. Picketing continued on the highway for a few hours. After lunch, students and their striking teachers carved pumpkins at the town park to express their frightening loss of learning opportunities this week and to spend time together to make up for lost time in the classroom.

Tomorrow’s schedule is subject to change

10:00 a.m. Bargaining with the District. Please show up and support us as we continue to work hard to reach an agreement.

3:00 p.m. SPEA will be hosting a rally for students, parents, and community at the library park off Main St. Our teachers deeply miss their students and will be delivering notes to their students and families. We will then walk unified to the Board of Education meeting committed to fighting for our students’ futures.

4:30 p.m. Board of Education study session

6:30 p.m. Board of Education meeting

Finally, as a reminder, if your family is affected by the strike and you need child care or food, please go to the Strike Update page on the SPEAstrong website for more information.

Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and at our website for all the latest developments.

See you tomorrow!

Thank you for your continued love and support,
The educators of the South Park Education Association
